Mr. Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel is angry because apparently, the president of the US, mr. Obama doesn’t have time to meet him in New York to talk about go to war against Iran. Something Israel is pressing, hopping that doing so in a presidential campaign time could be more convincing, and the US Administration is not so sure is a good idea. In fact, the same Mr. Obama in the Democratic Convention talked against an imminent war with Iran. He said literally:
“Strong countries and strong presidents talk to their adversaries.
That’s what Kennedy did with Krushchev, that’s what Reagan did with Gorbachev, that’s what Nixon did with Mao.
I mean, think about it. Iran, Cuba, Venezuela- these countries are tiny compared to the Soviet Union. They don’t pose a serious threat to us the way the Soviet Union posed a threat to us. And yet, we were willing to talk to the Soviet Union, at the time they were saying we’re gonna wipe you off the planet. And ultimately that direct engagement led to a series of measures that help prevent nuclear war, and over time, allowed the kind of opening that brought down the Berlin Wall. Now, that has to be the kind of approach that we take.
We shouldn’t be afraid. You know, Iran spend one hundredth of what we spend on the military. If Iran ever posed a serious threat to us, they wouldn’t stand a chance. And we should use that position of strength that we have to be bold enough to go ahead and listen. That doesn’t mean we agree with them on everything. We might not compromise on any issues. But at least we should find out are there areas of potential common interest, and we can reduce some of the tensions that have caused us so many problems around the world”.
From the Republican side the voices are for listening the warnings from Israel and the pressures by Netanyahu and going after Iran and their alleged nuclear ambitions with a pre-emptive war, the sooner the better. But Iran has allegedly the World’s eighth largest active duty military, the largest military excel Israel in the Middle East, and the country is much more strong than Iraq or Afghanistan, where the wars are not totally resolved yet, with violence still in place against americans and their allies. The US is yet recovering from all that and a war against Iran would be much more hard than the two previous together. And then is the global impact of the oil distribution through the Strait of Hormuz easily controlled by in case of war.
Let’s see if the Obama’s Administration stands in the position expressed by the president in the convention against the war. We don’t need more wars in the Middle East and is worthy to try the approach to reduce tensions. But in this case will need to reduce tensions also with Israel, so eager for help for a pre-emptive war of incalculable consequences.
