I always wonder what can cross the mind of a human being who kill another human being, directly or indirectly, doing so with his or her bare hands or ordering unlawful or lawful executions. Maybe it is easier to send someone to death backed by the death penalty. Some may think a criminal deserves to die for what he o her did and in this cases, after a trial and a sentence, the killing is more “civilized”. Then I remember a quote by J.R.R. Tolkien in The Lord of The Rings, a Trilogy plenty of good surprises I read several times, when Gandalf says to Frodo talking about this:
“Deserves it! I daresay he does. Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.”― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring
Then I think in all this cases in the US, a Country with so many people in death row, of people that after many years waiting for execution, if they had the good luck to get their case revised, and in time, with new evidences and DNA analysis have been set free after declared innocent.
This is the situation in the US where people wait in the death row for years and have time to appeal and some opportunities to live, and freedom of speech that make easier to know about them.
But what about China, for instance, where the executions are almost immediate to the sentence, there are no information about how much of them there are but its known that is the first Country executioner in the World with more than a thousand executions a year?. And then over there the capital punishment is applied to crimes that in western countries are only punished with several years of jail or even paying bails.
I think there have to be ways for the societies to self-defense from the criminals without using a “legal killing” as death penalty. Above all, Continue reading
