Pope Francis has summarised in his message for Easter the conflicts and the problems of today’s World. He asked Christians to pray for those situations but also to act: never “succumb to the pride which fuels violence and war but to have the humble courage of pardon and peace”. He also asked to them “to live in service to one another, not to be arrogant, but rather respectful and ready to help.”

More than 15,500 civilians have been killed in Iraq since the beginning of the year, according to the UN. More than 1,119 people, most of them civilians, have been killed only in september. But this figure doesn’t include the casualties from the ongoing fighting in Anbar and the people who died because of the heat and hunger while trying to flee.

US President Barack Obama announced a campaign of airstrikes in Iraq and Syria to “degrade and ultimately destroy the terrorist group known as ISIL”. He contemplates helping the opposition groups fighting in Syria against the ISIL fighters but not to the Syrian regime that also fights the extremists, because he thinks Al Assad has lost his legitimacy.

According to the UN over the last 48 hours 200,000 civilians have fled the advance of ISIL.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has taken over many areas of Iraq, including Mosul, Tikrit, and towns in Salah al-Din province and there is fear that they will continue their advance towards the capital, Baghdad. The Iraqi Government has asked for help to the US To fight them. Human Rights Watch warns that the advance of ISIL in Iraq and Syria puts civilians in danger.
