The Pope and today's world
Pope Francis has summarised in his message for Easter the conflicts and the problems of today’s World. He asked Christians to pray for those situations but also to act: never “succumb to the pride which fuels violence and war but to have the humble courage of pardon and peace”. He also asked to them “to live in service to one another, not to be arrogant, but rather respectful and ready to help.”
It doesn’t mind what was signed in the Minsk agreement on Ukraine. The pro-Russian forces continued their attacks untill they have taken the city of Debaltseve. There were no will to comply untill that strategic town fell in their hands. And now Kiev accused Moscow to send more tanks and troops, in an apparent building of forces to prepare an assault on Mariupol.
Kerry offert on Ukraine
John Kerry said that his country “is prepared to consider rolling back sanctions on Russia when the Minsk agreements of September 2014, and now this agreement, are fully implemented. that would mean a the facto recognition of the annexation of Crimea which triggered the sanctions.
Ukraine: meetings and harsh reality
Angela Merkel and Francois Hollande are trying to mediate between Ukrainian President Poroshenko and Russian president Putin to stop the bloodshed in Eastern Ukraine where nobody observes the cease-fire. On the contrary the fighting intensifies each day. The UN estimates that there have been more than 5,300 killed and almost one million displaced people since last April.
Ukraine, Russian troops and the US
NATO has observed columns of Russian equipment, primarily Russian tanks, Russian artillery, Russian air defense systems, and Russian combat troops entering Ukraine over the last 48 hours. The US considers that with this move Russia “keeps fuelling war” in Ukraine. Moscow answered that all that is a “propaganda concoction”.
Elections results in Ukraine
Petro Poroshenko didn’t win the parliamentary elections in Ukraine. With the 80% of ballots counted his party was slightly behind the People’s Front of Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk. Both are pro western parties but with different ideologies.
Ukraine will have gas for the winter, Poroshenko says
President Pedro Poroshenko announced that Ukraine will have Russian gas for the winter after his meetings with Russian president Vladimir Putin in Milan. Gazprom CEO said that Ukraine has agreed to all terms set by Russia to reach the agreement. The two leaders didn’t make much progress in the peace process in eastern Ukraine. In Donetsk, the rebels have said that they are ready to stop firing if Russia acts as a guarantor of security in the region.
UN: At least 3,660 people killed in eastern Ukraine since April
At least 3,660 people were killed and 8,756 wounded in eastern Ukraine since mid April to 6 October, the UN Human Rights Office sad on Wednesday. According to the last report the office has, there are 375,792 internally displaced people in Ukraine because of the violence.
